Origin

The Maine coon is a descendant of a number of long-haired house cats who were taken by settlers from Europe to America. They have mixed with the cats residing in ' Maine '.

Appearance

The cat breed Maine Coon is one of the largest (house)cat in the world. An adult cat can take up to 8-9 kg. The Maine Coon has also a very ' wild ' appearance. The coat is half long with a wide collar around the neck and often feathers on the ears.

Temperament

The Maine Coon is the ideal company cat. They are generally intelligent, playful and they are tolerant with people and other pets.

Grooming

The Maine Coon has a half long self-cleaning coat. A weekly brush is enough to keep the coat in a beautiful condition. In spring and summer, the cat has a moulting period. The coat may be washed only with a special shampoo.

The life expectancy of an indoor cat is around 12-18 years.
